The occupying power within
Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old US citizen and mother of three, was shot dead in Minneapolis on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, by Jonathan Ross, an agent of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
While federal authorities and President Donald Trump described the shooting as self-defense and denounced Good as a “domestic terrorist” who used her vehicle as a weapon, local politicians such as Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the action “unlawful use of force” and questioned the federal authorities‘ account.
Good was an award-winning poet who studied creative writing at Old Dominion University in Virginia and received the Academy of American Poets Prize in 2020.

(…) “ICE is the new Gestapo”
The following weekend, huge numbers of people took to the streets across the US to protest against ICE’s murderous practices. This is not an “isolated incident”: „In 2025, the number of deaths reached a peak. Thirty-two people died in custody from medical emergencies, suicides, and other causes related to detention conditions, the highest known number since 2004, which was widely attributed to overcrowding, inadequate medical care, and deteriorating detention conditions.“ (United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), wikipedia.org)
In Minneapolis alone, tens of thousands of people did not lament individual cases, but made connections.
Der Spiegel reporter Franz Hornig reported live on the events in an almost sympathetic tone:
„What is striking are the many references to the Third Reich that are being made here. ‘ICE is the new Gestapo’ is written on the banners. (…) One banner shows a swastika that has been crossed out.“
The TV report also shows a poster comparing the year 2026 with “1933,” and a young woman featured in the report talks about what she has learned about fascism and how she wants to and will stand on the “right side” today. (…)
It is not only in the USA that many people are preoccupied with these and other questions:

- Where are political and social developments heading? Is the ICE the new “secret police”?
- What happens when national and international laws and conventions are broken with absolute impunity?
- Who benefits from this?
If the government and the opposition (in the parliamentary arena) differ not in substance, but at best in style and application, the question arises:

- When and what conclusions do we draw from this? (…)
Some attribute these “Gestapo” methods to the Trump administration. That is wrong and misleading. ICE was created after 9/11 in 2001, so it is not Trump’s “private army,” but was established by the bipartisan establishment in the US. What the Trump administration is doing is building on this and knows full well that the Democrats will keep quiet when it comes to this internal army. It has nothing to fear at the parliamentary level, and that is how it is acting:
“Ten thousand new employees, more than triple the previous budget: the US government under President Trump is massively expanding the immigration authority ICE. Its goal: to deport one million people per year.” (Tagesschau, October 21, 2025)
The fact that the Trump administration has taken over the existing repressive instruments and is using them to the fullest is one side of this conflict.
The other side is evident in how the Trump administration is using its power at home and abroad to intimidate political opponents and weaken social institutions. The Trump administration doesn’t just want to make life hell for people in Palestine, Iran, Yemen, the West Bank, Cuba, Colombia, and icy Greenland. It also wants to make life hell for Muslims, Black people, and anyone who doesn’t fit into the white power image in its own country:
